Lines can be used to great effect in design. They can be used to organize information. Lines can be used to separate but they can also be used to connect. Lines can create a sense of movement or direction and they can give the eye a path to follow. // Lines can contain information and separate it from other content.
Lines can also be used to organize information. // Solid, Dashed, Dotted // Vertical, Horizontal, Diagonal, Zigzag, Curved, Freeform // Thick, Medium, Thin
Lines can be used to connect elements of the design together. They depict a visual association between separated objects.
As they connect, lines can also draw pathways for the eye to follow as it moves through the design. The visual pathway tells a story. It guides the eye through the design to the most important elements.
With a design that contains a lot of text, the two most common patterns for the eye to follow are the F-pattern and the Z-pattern. Designers can lead the eye on a different path by using lines to show hierarchy and direction.
