Design Trends: Gradients

Design Trends: Gradients

Color Value: The hue of a color is the technical term for its value in the color wheel. Red, yellow and purple are examples of hues. Hues can be adjusted by adding white, black, or grey to the color. Adding white creates a tint. Adding black creates a shade. Adding grey creates a tone.
Gradients: Value refers to how light or dark the resulting tint, shade, or tone is. A gradient is a spectrum of color values. Gradients can be created by adding white, black, or grey to a hue as in the above examples, or by blending two or more hues together.
Design Trends: As the minimalism of flat design has given way to design trends that embrace more texture and shadow, gradients have also become quite popular. They are an easy way to add color and interest to the background of a design. Gradient backgrounds make dark figures in the foreground stand out (similar to the look of photographs taken at sunset).
Gradients make designs look trendy.
When should you use trends? Gradients are "in" right now, but that does not necessarily mean you should use them in all of your designs. As a course designer, you need to take into consideration questions like how long it will be before the course will be revised? Design trends come and go. Gradients feel fresh and exciting right now, but in a few years they may feel dated as the design world moves on. So you may not want to overuse them if course updates don't happen very frequently.
