Principles of Design: Alignment

Use of Alignment

By Horizon

» Engagement » Principles » Alignment » Use of Alignment

Types of Alignment: Alignment refers to lining up elements along an axis. There are two basic ways to do this: align elements along an edge or along a center line. Edge alignment can be left or right, top or bottom. Center alignment can be vertical or horizontal. Edge Alignment: Left, Right, Top, Bottom. Center Alignment: Vertical, Horizontal.
Why use alignment? When design elements are well aligned, the design looks neat, clean, and professional. Right aligned text is harder to read, but used sparingly, it stands out. When alignment is just a little bit off it detracts from the design's overall effectiveness.
Using grids: Grids are very helpful for organizing your design. Gridlines can be simple or complex. Either way, elements can be aligned to the gridlines. The gridlines are removed from the final product, but the aligned results are still visible and give the design a polished look.
ALIGNMENT MAKES A DESIGN LOOK POLISHED.
Balance: Aligning design elements to a grid contributes to an overall feeling of balance in the design. Alignment to different lines in different parts of the design adds to the visual interest and helps the overall composition maintain a sense of balance.
